DeSantis Announces More Purple Star School of Distinction Designations for Florida Schools

Earlier today, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis announced that 176 additional schools in Florida received the Purple Star School of Distinction designation for their exceptional efforts to support military families. Since the program was established in Florida in 2021, nearly 400 schools across the state of Florida have earned this recognition by providing liaisons, student support, professional development for staff, and resources specifically designed to assist military families.

Additionally, for the first time this year, we introduced the Purple Star School District designation to recognize Florida school districts with at least 75% of their schools designated as Purple Star Schools. Congratulations to the Bay, Brevard, Citrus, Okaloosa, and Santa Rosa school districts for achieving this honor.

The Purple Star School of Distinction is an award for public schools demonstrating a strong commitment to military-connected students and their families. It recognizes schools that understand the challenges faced by these children, such as frequent relocations and parental deployments.

To earn the Purple Star designation, schools must meet specific criteria, including having a dedicated military liaison, a military-friendly website with resources, and professional development for teachers to address the needs of military students. Schools may also create programs for smooth student integration, like peer mentoring.
