Osceola County Sheriff Arrested by Feds, FDLE on Racketeering Charges

Osceola County Sheriff Marcos R. Lopez was arrested on Thursday morning on charges of racketeering and conspiracy to commit racketeering, stemming from his alleged involvement in a large-scale illegal gambling operation in Central Florida. According to reports from the Associated Press, Fox 35 Orlando, and statements from law enforcement officials, the operation reportedly generated over $21.6 million in illicit proceeds through activities such as lotteries and slot machines. Lopez is accused of using his position to protect and advance the interests of the gambling enterprise, including accepting campaign contributions and personal payments.

Following his arrest, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis suspended Lopez from his role as sheriff and appointed Christopher A. Blackmon, a veteran law enforcement official from the Florida Highway Patrol, as his replacement.

This incident adds to previous controversies involving Lopez, including a 2024 case where he mistakenly posted a graphic image of a deceased 13-year-old girl, Madeline Soto, on social media during an ongoing homicide investigation. He was fined $250 for the violation and added to the state’s Brady List.

Lopez is currently being held in the Lake County Jail as the investigation continues.
