Florida has awarded more than 8,700 recruitment bonuses to new law enforcement officers through its Law Enforcement Recruitment Bonus Payment Program, Governor Ron DeSantis announced Thursday. The latest round included 40 Hillsborough County sheriff’s deputies, each receiving a $5,000 post-tax bonus. An additional 715 officers across the state also received bonuses in this round.
The program, launched in 2022, offers one-time $5,000 incentives to newly employed officers as both a gesture of appreciation and a recruitment tool. To date, it has distributed more than $58 million, attracting over 1,900 officers from 49 states and two U.S. territories. More than 500 of those have come from states the Governor’s office described as having “anti-police” policies, such as California, Illinois, and New York.
“In Tampa this morning, I had the honor of hand-delivering $5,000 recruitment bonuses to 40 new Hillsborough County sheriff’s deputies and thanking them for all they do to serve their communities,” DeSantis said. He added that the state’s law enforcement support includes recruitment bonuses, pay raises, wellness resources, and “tough-on-crime policies.”
Lieutenant Governor Jay Collins praised Florida’s law enforcement policies, saying the administration is “taking decisive steps not only to protect their safety but also enhance the quality of their livelihoods.”
Under the 2025-26 budget, Florida allocated $49 million for pay increases benefiting more than 16,200 state sworn law enforcement officers, raising the minimum base salary to $60,000. The state has also boosted entry-level and veteran pay, enhanced wellness programs, increased penalties for crimes against officers, introduced law enforcement courses in high schools, and launched a scholarship program covering training costs for new recruits.
In addition to the recruitment bonus, Florida law enforcement officers receive benefits such as health and retirement plans, student loan forgiveness, home loan assistance, and opportunities for career advancement.
