ST. LUCIE COUNTY, Fla. — Federal immigration authorities have issued a detainer for a truck driver accused of causing a crash that killed three people in Florida last week.
According to the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles, the crash occurred on August 12, 2025, when Harjinder Singh, driving an 18-wheeler, attempted to make an illegal U-turn through an “Official Use Only” access point on the Florida Turnpike. Officials said the maneuver blocked all lanes of traffic, leading to a collision that left three people dead at the scene.
The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) confirmed that Singh, who is in the country illegally, has been charged with three counts of vehicular homicide. ICE issued an immigration detainer on August 16 to ensure Singh remains in custody following his state prosecution and is transferred to federal custody afterward.
A video obtained by Breaking911 reportedly shows Singh making the turn moments before the collision.
Federal officials criticized California’s licensing policies after it was revealed that Singh obtained a commercial driver’s license there despite his immigration status. “Three innocent people were killed in Florida because California issued a Commercial Driver’s License to an illegal alien,” said DHS Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin in a statement.
Singh remains in custody while awaiting trial on state charges.
