October in Florida is the State’s Highest Risk Month for Home Burglaries

Every year around the holiday season, local law enforcement will increase its presence warning communities about porch pirate looking to rob homeowners.

Based on convention wisdom, most would think the months of November and December are when crime spikes in local neighborhoods. Not so.

Recent data from the FBI Crime Data Explorer looked at the number of residential burglaries in each state during each month over the most recently available 12-month period and calculated the average number of monthly burglaries.

The FBI says July seems to be the most common month for residential burglaries nationwide with September generally the safest.

But in Florida, October is the highest risk month for home burglaries.  While Florida’s yearly burglary rate is below the national average, experts have warned Floridians to take extra precautions this month.  This figure is 33% lower than the national average burglary rate.

The FBI averaged the number of monthly burglaries per 100,000 people in each state was then calculated by comparing the burglary data to each state’s population, allowing for fair comparison between states.

Sam Bitar with the building company for S-Line Contractors (https://www.slinecontractors.com/) says with the work they do for clients, they’ve noticed more burglaries in the southern part of the country compared to the northern

“Seven out of the top ten states are in the southern region of the US, suggesting that states here may be at a generally higher risk of residential burglary. Looking at the bottom ten states, where people are least at risk of burglary, many are located in the northeast. This regional difference could be down to a number of different factors, including law enforcement resources, housing types and economic struggles,” said Bitar.
