FSU Football 2026 Season Preview: Noles Will Start Under Pressure, With Major Questions and Concerns

It’s do-or-die time for Mike Norvell and his tenure as the head coach of Florida State football. Can the Seminoles return to the dominant offensive style they enjoyed during the Jordan Travis era, when they racked up 23 straight wins, including victories over LSU (twice) and Oklahoma? A string of close losses and bad luck has plagued FSU since the majority of its starters sat out of the 2024 Orange Bowl.

FSU is pinning its hopes on transfer quarterback Ashton Daniels.

Major pundits forecast another subpar season, with On3 predicting FSU to finish in the bottom half of the ACC. After an absolutely dominant win over Alabama, the Seminoles stumbled to a 5-7 record in 2025, a step up from their disastrous 2-10 campaign in 2024, but still far below the standard expected in Tallahassee. There were flashes last season, including offensive improvement and moments that suggested the program still had enough talent to compete with quality opponents. But inconsistency, road struggles and late-season losses kept FSU out of the bowl picture and left fans frustrated.

The 2026 season begins Aug. 29 at Doak Campbell Stadium against New Mexico State, giving FSU a chance to start fast before a much more revealing Labor Day matchup against SMU on Sept. 7. The Seminoles then get an early open week before traveling to Tuscaloosa on Sept. 19 to face Alabama, a game that will draw national attention and serve as one of the biggest measuring sticks of Norvell’s tenure.

The quarterback position will again be central to the Seminoles’ hopes. Daniels was Florida State’s starter after a spring competition, giving FSU an experienced dual-threat option. Daniels has played in 37 career games with 23 starts, throwing for more than 4,700 yards while also adding nearly 1,400 rushing yards, and the Seminoles will need him to provide stability after two seasons of uneven quarterback play.

Florida State also leaned heavily on the transfer portal to reshape the roster. The Seminoles added more than 20 transfers, including linebacker Chris Jones from Southern Miss, who brings proven production after recording 135 tackles last season. Jones is expected to help stabilize a defense that needs to become more physical, especially against the run, if FSU is going to survive a demanding ACC slate.

The middle of the schedule will determine whether Florida State is simply improved or truly relevant. After home games against Central Arkansas and Virginia, the Seminoles face back-to-back road tests at Louisville on Oct. 9 and Miami on Oct. 17. Following a second open week, FSU hosts Clemson on Oct. 31, creating a crucial three-game stretch that could define the season before November even begins.

November offers little relief. Florida State travels to Boston College on Nov. 7 and Pitt on Nov. 13 before closing ACC play at home against NC State on Nov. 21. The regular season ends Nov. 27 against Florida in the annual rivalry game, this time on Black Friday. For a program trying to regain credibility, beating the Gators would carry extra value regardless of the standings.

The realistic goal for Florida State in 2026 is not national championship talk, but a clear return to winning football. A bowl berth should be the baseline expectation, while a strong start and improved defensive play could put the Seminoles back in the ACC race. Anything less than noticeable progress will only intensify questions about Norvell’s future and whether Florida State can reclaim its place among college football’s most respected programs.
