At the end of last week, Florida state Senate President Bill Galvano, R-Bradenton, named Sen. Lizbeth Benacquisto, R-Ft. Myers, and Sen. Linda Stewart, D-Orlando, to the Women’s Suffrage Centennial Commission.
Galvano weighed in on his appointments on Friday.
“I am honored to have Senators Benacquisto and Stewart representing the Senate in this important endeavor,” said Galvano. “As we commemorate this historic milestone, the commission will work to encourage civic, historical, educational, economic, and other organizations throughout the state to organize and participate in activities to expand the understanding and appreciation of women’s suffrage as well as the challenges women of different backgrounds and ethnicities faced following the passage and ratification of the Nineteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution.
“I am grateful to Senators Benacquisto and Stewart for their willingness to serve the Senate and our state leading up to this landmark moment in our nation’s history,” Galvano added.
With next year marking the 100th anniversary of the Nineteenth Amendment, earlier this year, the Legislature voted to create a 19-member Women’s Suffrage Centennial Commission. State Sen. Lauren Book’s, D-Plantation, proposal was signed into law by Gov. Ron DeSantis.
