While they are not on the ballot in 2020, a new poll shows Florida’s two U.S. senators are in solid shape with both of their heads above water.
Morning Consult released its quarterly look at where all 100 members of the Senate stand with voters in their home states and both U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., and U.S. Sen. Rick Scott, R-Fla., get good marks from Floridians.
While neither of Florida’s senators ranks as one of the most popular senators in the nation, they also don’t place in the back of the pack either.
Rubio is approved by 46 percent of Florida voters while 34 percent of them disapprove of him and 20 percent are not sure. First elected to the U.S. Senate in 2010 after service in the state Legislature including rising to become speaker of the Florida House, Rubio ran for the Republican presidential nomination in 2016. While he lost out to Donald Trump in the presidential primaries, Rubio bounced back to keep his Senate seat later that year.
Scott’s numbers are very similar to where Rubio stands. The poll shows 46 percent of Florida voters approve of Scott while 36 percent disapprove of him while 18 percent are not sure. After a prominent career in the private sector, Scott became increasingly politically active, leading Conservatives for Patients’ Rights (CPR) against then-President Barack Obama’s healthcare law. Scott was elected governor in 2010 and was reelected in 2014. In 2018, he defeated three-term U.S. Sen. Bill Nelson, D-Fla.
Morning Consult polled hundreds of thousands of Americans in recent weeks in its various surveys on U.S. senators including 51,856 registered voters in Florida. The margin of error for the sample looking at Florida stood at +/1 percent.
