AdventHealth CEO Announces Retirement

Terry Shaw, CEO of AdventHealth, one of the nation’s largest faith-based health systems, announced that he will retire in July of 2025. According to an official statement from AdventHealth, Shaw’s decision was shared with AdventHealth team members in a video message on Friday. Shaw cited his desire to create the opportunity for the next generation of leaders to guide the company.

“We will be forever grateful for Terry’s leadership as CEO for the past eight years, including his prior 30+ years of leadership across mission, strategy, operations, clinical and finance,” AdventHealth’s Board Chair, Gary Thurber, said. “His wisdom, guidance and steadfast commitment to our shared vision have been invaluable. Together, we strengthened the foundation of AdventHealth, ensuring that its mission will endure for generations to come.”

Shaw’s internal message included this personal sentiment: “When I joined AdventHealth over 40 years ago, I never imagined the profound joy, challenges and sense of purpose this career would bring. Our mission of providing whole-person care as a faith-based organization has always been more than just a brand promise—it has been the core of everything we do. Leading this incredible organization has been the honor of my lifetime. My decision to retire clears the path for the very capable next generation of AdventHealth leaders and I am fully confident in the ability of these leaders to continue our legacy of success.”

AdventHealth’s Board of Directors has a long-term succession plan in place, with a thorough process to select an internal successor in April 2025. Shaw will continue to play an active role on the AdventHealth Board.

Under Shaw’s stewardship, AdventHealth has achieved a number of key accomplishments during his tenure, some of which include:

  • Uniting the organization under one cohesive brand, strengthening its identity and purpose.
  • Creating a 10-year strategic roadmap called Vision 2030, a strategic framework that lays the foundation for long-term growth, financial strength, clinical excellence, value-based care and long-term sustainability of its mission.
  • Establishing a cutting-edge technology ecosystem within the company to meet the evolving needs of patients and communities.
  • Prioritizing the consumer experience – putting consumers at the center – as a critical component to the organization’s success, creating the opportunity to serve nine million patients annually.
  • Reaffirming a commitment and comprehensive strategy to care for the team, fostering a learning culture, collaboration and wholeness, which has grown the organization to nearly 100,000 team members.
