Americans Want a Break from Political Stories

The Associated Press and the NORC Center for Public Affairs Research conducted a survey and found voters are taking a break from political news.

Around 66% told pollsters they are cutting back on reading and watching stories on issues dealing with government and politics.

The poll also shows more Democrat voters than Republicans and independents are taking a breather from stories.

“Democrats just lost an election so it’s not surprising to see them take a sabbatical,” said Jamie Miller, columnist at Reasonable Arguments.

The results indicated that 70% of Democrats surveyed planned to cut back on watching political news, compared to approximately 60% of both Republicans and Independents who expressed the same intention.

Since election night, the Nielsen company reported that prime-time TV viewership for MSNBC and CNN has declined by 45-54%. In contrast, Fox News has experienced an increase in viewership, up by 13% since the election.

It is not surprising to see Americans reducing their time spent on political news. In May 2024, just a few months before election day, the Pew Research Center conducted a survey of voters regarding the presidential race. The findings revealed that many Americans were already fatigued by the coverage. Specifically, 62% of Americans stated they were exhausted by the extensive news coverage of the 2024 campaigns, while only 35% claimed they were satisfied with it.
