Barney Bishop: Why Can’t the CDC Get it Right on COVID?

The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) have been a bastion of inconsistent misinformation ever since the beginning of the COVID pandemic in 2020.

With the advent of the Omicron version of COVID-19 last year, the CDC is once again confusing Americans about how and when to mask and quarantine.

The talking faces for the CDC are Rochelle Walensky, MD, MPH and the ubiquitous Anthony Fauci, MD, who while serving as the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases is also the principal spokesperson for President Joe Biden’s administration regarding all-things COVID.

Neither of these medical professionals have demonstrated the ability to communicate what actions Americans clearly and consistently should be taking on a daily basis.

The latest brouhaha is that Dr. Fauci recently said that we may always have to wear masks on airlines in the future.

What? Dr. Fauci told us from the beginning that, once America and the world reached herd immunity, the drastic protocols would no longer be necessary. We are getting closer to that magic percentage every day, yet COVID mutations seem to ensure that herd immunity, which he no longer mentions at all, is an elusive goal never to be reached.

Whether face masks really work in restricting the spread of COVID is still debatable because Dr. Fauci himself has taken positions on both sides of the face mask debate.

Allegedly both Drs. Walensky and Fauci “follow the science” but the real truth is that they “follow the political science.”

Remember that it wasn’t that long ago that the Biden administration insisted on lockdowns and mandated vaccinations. Yet when Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis dared to strike out on his own path and not follow the political science regarding mandating of wearing masks, shutting down the public education system, and requiring everyone to get a vaccine, he demonstrated that the real science proved that another way was still mindful of the need for protection along with a good bit of common sense.

DeSantis if you recall was the first governor in the country to push back against the CDC on which cohort of Americans should be prioritized to receive vaccinations, senior citizens, and over time he was vindicated by his decision to the point that the CDC eventually reversed their position and pushed for elderly Americans to be vaccinated first.

Then when Blue State governors locked down all schools, it was DeSantis who pushed to have schools remain open and that has proven that the real science once again, is different from the political science professed by the Biden administration.

In fact, even Biden is now saying that all schools should remain open and not be shut down, what a 180 from his previous positions and pronouncements.

Somehow the Chicago teachers’ union hasn’t gotten the message as they are threatening to strike if accommodations are not made for the teachers, to hell with the student’s needs.

All of these shenanigans have woefully undercut the legitimacy of what Drs. Walensky and Fauci tell us on the nightly news to do with this new variant.

The utter truth is that somewhere between 15 and 20 percent of all Americans are never going to be vaccinated regardless of the rules or the law. And the likelihood of them vaccinating their children is zero.

The medical talking heads have told us that we create natural immunities within our body after we experience COVID, yet it seems none of the protocols that the CDC issues ever consider natural antibodies from Americans who have contracted the disease.

While the mainstream media continues to shout that the “sky is falling” the medical experts are telling us that if you are vaccinated and boosted the likelihood of hospitalization is minimal and the consequences of getting Omicron are generally mild symptoms with so far, no long-term ill effects. The ever-higher number of people being hospitalized are those that are unvaccinated and non-boosted, but you never hear the media succinctly share that information. It’s the scare game all over again.

What Americans really want to be told is the unvarnished truth, and then let us each decide for ourselves – and our family – how we will deal with this never-ending pandemic.

If the truth continues to be withheld or is manipulated to suit the wishes of a distinct minority in this country who want everyone to mask at all times, then the credibility of our government is going to continue to diminish.

Americans don’t want to be told by the government, what they must do to protect others. We will always do whatever we need to do to protect ourselves and our family, and DeSantis has understood, from the pandemic’s beginning, this important and unflinching principle that most Americans hold so dear – freedom.

The medical community, at the highest levels, must begin articulating a commonsensical approach to COVID and its unlimited number of variations which the disease will continue to perform in order to survive, it’s most basic need.

Americans will decide on their own when to mask according to their own self-risk assessment. We will also vaccinate based on our belief in the system that approves the shots that we will need to ward off hospitalization, long-term effects, and death. And we will socialize based on the self-perception of what the risk is to ourselves, our families, and our closest friends.

If the Biden administration acknowledges this simple fact, it has the opportunity to change the conversation in a way that Americans might once again believe what we are told medically, if not, the status quo will continue.
