The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has a national database called the Safe Drinking Water Information System (SDWIS). It tracks and stores data on public drinking water systems, their violations of EPA regulations, and compliance with the Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA).
It contains information on water system profiles, monitoring and reporting results, violations of Maximum Contaminant Levels (MCLs), and enforcement actions taken by states and the EPA and consumers can search SDWIS to find your drinking water supplier and view its history of violations and enforcement actions.
SDWIS list and ranks each state based on the number of reported water quality violations and reveals which states have the cleanest tap water based on the number of water quality violations in each state.
The data shows Hawaii with the cleaners tap water and Alaska with the worst. Florida has the tenth-cleanest tap water of all states.
The 10 states with the cleanest tap water and fewer water violations.

46 Idaho
47 Vermont
48 Mississippi

“What really stands out is how much cleaner the water systems are in the top-performing states compared to those at the bottom of the list. Clean, treated water is an incredibly valuable resource, but one that’s often lost to hidden leaks beneath our feet,” said Ron Hoffmeyer, CEO at Evans Leak Detection.
Hoffmeyer says the enormous gap between the best and worst-ranked states reveals just how much improvement remains possible, and homeowners can support water conservation efforts through timely leak detection and repairs, particularly in states facing drought conditions.
