Carlos Trujillo Nominated to Serve as Assistant Secretary for the Western Hemisphere

An attorney from South Florida, Trujillo first ran for the state House back in 2010 in a seat representing parts of Miami-Dade County. The White House announced Trujillo was nominated for the OAS position back in 2017 and he resigned from the Florida House in 2018 after being confirmed to the post on a voice vote.

President Donald Trump has nominated a prominent Florida Republican to serve as Assistant Secretary for the Western Hemisphere in the U.S. State Department.

Trump nominated former state Rep. Carlos Trujillo for the position and to serve on the Board of Directors of the Inter-American Foundation. Currently, Trujillo is the U.S. Permanent Representative to the Organization of American States (OAS).

Trujillo has a strong supporter in a key position in the U.S. Senate in U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., who chairs the U.S. Senate Western Hemisphere Subcommittee and sits on the U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Committee.

“Few individuals understand the ongoing complexities and threats our region is currently facing like Ambassador Trujillo,” Rubio said on Tuesday. “Ambassador Trujillo dutifully represents America’s interests at the OAS and advocates for human rights, democracy, and regional stability. I have worked closely with Ambassador Trujillo for many years and have no doubt he will faithfully continue to represent the United States as Assistant Secretary of State for the Western Hemisphere. I look forward to his nomination hearing and continuing the important work ahead on behalf of the American people.”
