CLEARWATER, Fla. — Clearwater Marine Aquarium (CMA) announced the temporary furlough of several positions due to financial challenges stemming from Hurricanes Helene and Milton.
Starting Monday, January 20, CMA will temporarily furlough several positions for a period of two to three months. Additionally, the leadership team will experience salary reductions beginning on the same date.
A total of 22 full-time and 26 part-time employees will be affected by the furlough. CMA cited a decrease in attendance following the hurricanes as a key reason for these decisions.
“Despite these challenges, CMA remains committed to its mission of rescue, rehabilitation, release, and research of marine animals,” the aquarium stated in a news release. “The well-being of the animals remains our top priority, and CMA will continue to ensure they are well-fed and cared for.”
In addition to these measures, the aquarium is actively seeking financial support from FEMA and the Small Business Administration.
“CMA assures the community and its supporters that the long-term master plan remains solid, with a continued focus on conservation education and the expansion of its marine animal programs,” the release emphasized.
