Florida GOP Congressman Rep. Vern Buchanan wants to eliminate federal taxes on overtime for police officers.
“Every day, law enforcement officers across America put on the badge and head into work not knowing what the day will bring,” Buchanan said. “They miss holidays, birthdays and school events, all in service to their communities.”
Buchanan has support from local and national law enforcement, including the National Fraternal Order of Police and Chief William Tokajer of the City of Holmes Beach, located in Manatee County.
Chief Tokajer says the idea of ending taxes on overtime pay for police officers is welcome news.
“Doing so would give officers more take-home pay, provide meaningful support to their families, and send a clear message that we value the men and women who keep us safe. Many officers rely on overtime to cover basic expenses, like groceries, child care, and housing. Taking less of that pay in taxes would make a real difference in their lives,” said the Chief.
Chief Tokajer also stated that increasing funding for law enforcement would improve retention and recruitment, two of the most pressing challenges facing law enforcement agencies today.
With the national shortages of officers leaving the profession, police departments dealing with shrinking ranks and low morale, the Congressman and the Chief say the timing is perfect.
“Since 2020, attacks on law enforcement, efforts to defund departments, and a lack of political support in many cities have taken a toll on the profession,” noted Chief Tokajer.
“We ask so much of our law enforcement officers. It’s time to give them something meaningful in return,” said the Congressman.
Congressman Buchanan believes he could get Democrats to cross the aisle and support his measure to end the tax on overtime for police officers.
This isn’t a partisan issue,” said Buchanan.
