Car insurance costs have risen steadily and sharply in recent years, with searches for “why is car insurance so expensive” reaching an all-time high this year.
Search interest was up 104% compared to its 5-year baseline and has increased by 244% globally since 2010.
There are multiple factors that impact these costs, including inflation and individual driving behavior.
Aaren James, Senior Analyst at Save Max Auto says there are ways for consumers to save money on their insurance.
James said one of the main reasons behind higher premiums is the advancements made to the cars that need insurance. With many newer vehicles using technologies such as sensors, cameras and driver assistance systems, the prices of maintenance are bound to be higher, often more than what the driver expects. Moreover, in certain areas, parts might be difficult to source for some makes and models, increasing costs for insurers.
The prices of premiums depend on both wider market conditions and individual claim history. Added to this are labor costs, vehicle values, medical expenses, and the average cost of settling claims.
At the same time, weather-related damage and more frequent high-value claims in some regions have contributed to rising operating costs.
Although it is not possible for drivers to avoid paying the price of broader market conditions, there are still practical ways to manage costs without giving up on important cover.
1. Review mileage estimates regularly
Annual mileage can directly influence premiums, but many drivers continue using outdated estimates year after year. Drivers who overestimate their annual mileage even by 5,000 miles could be paying significantly more than they need to.
2. Choose deductibles carefully
Selecting a higher deductible can reduce monthly premiums, but it should remain realistic enough to cover out-of-pocket costs if a claim becomes necessary.
3. Bundle policies where appropriate
Combining auto insurance with other policies can sometimes unlock discounts, but it’s necessary for drivers to compare the total value of the premiums and their actual usefulness instead of just assuming that bundles automatically offer the lowest cost.
4. Avoid paying for cover that no longer fits your needs
When it comes to renewals, reviewing extras and reassessing coverage is the most important thing, as your needs and wants can differ greatly after life changes such as a move, a change in commute patterns or paying off a vehicle.
5. Compare policies regularly rather than automatically renewing
Rates can shift significantly between providers, even for similar coverage levels. Comparing policy structures and exclusions might be the best way to reveal better value without reducing protection. Moreover, switching providers at renewal rather than auto-renewing can save drivers a meaningful amount.
