The latest filings with the Federal Election Commission (FEC) show Democrats are out-fundraising Republicans with three times the amount of cash on hand.
Going into 2024, the Republican National Committee (RNC) is showing its worst fundraising performance since 2013 when Mitt Romney just lost the 2012 presidential racer to Barack Obama.
In 2023, the RNC raised $87.2 million and currently has just over $8 million in cash on hand. At the same time, the DNC raised $120 million in 2023, and show $21 million in cash on hand.
New leadership coming to the RNC will have to raise the bar to keep up with the Democrats. Money raised will be needed in key swing states for this year’s election.
Some analysts believe the GOP will have a tough time raising money this year, with the ousting of former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (who was good at raising campaign dollars) to now where Republicans seem challenged on keeping incumbents around instead of seeing several members of congress are retiring among the GOP rank.
Democrats publicly are taking advantage of the disarray in the republican party.
“The RNC has become a financial dumpster fire at a time when they literally cannot afford it,” said DNC spokesperson Alex Floyd.
The RNC says they will make up the loss to focus on battleground states they will need to win by investing in hiring new staff to focus on 15 states they believe will be key in winning this year.
Republicans also say they will focus on early voting and mail-in ballots.
