Disney has plans to expand its Magic Kingdom theme park at Walt Disney World. according to the Orlando Business Journal, the expansion will be the largest one ever for the park, about 14 acres in size. A team from Disney is currently researching and designing the expansion, but no details have been released yet regarding the theme or timeline.
Disney CEO Bob Iger has confirmed that permit applications for construction preparation will be filed soon. The expansion plan aligns with the company’s $60 billion investment across its parks, cruises, and experiences segment over the next decade.
At the 2022 D23 Expo, Disney discussed potential major expansions including a trio of additions built behind Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, themed after the films “Coco” and “Encanto,” and a land inspired by Disney villains. Guests may get to visit Casita, the magical home from “Encanto,” and ride an alebrije, a mythical creature in Mexican culture featured in the film “Coco.”
The investment plans have important economic implications for Central Florida, as Disney’s Experiences division oversees the company’s theme parks, cruise lines, and more. During an earnings call on February 7, 2024, Disney CFO Hugh Johnston noted that 70% of the $60 billion is earmarked for incremental capacity-expanding investments worldwide.
