For decades, the region of Orlando known as “The Attractions Area” has been known for major traffic problems on Interstate 4, especially along the span where various exits to Walt Disney World’s theme parks are located.
This week, the Florida Department of Transportation announced an expedited plan to build additional lanes and bridges to reduce congestion and simplify travel for locals and tourists alike.
The project, known as “Beyond the Ultimate”, involves extending the highway by 14 miles, from State Road 536 near Disney Springs to U.S. Highway 27 in Polk County, covering areas of west Orange County, west Osceola, and north Polk counties.
The project is estimated to cost around $2.5 billion and will use a “phased design build” approach to speed up construction. The proposal was presented to nearly 400 builders, subcontractors, and specialty companies at an industry forum held at an Orlando International Airport conference hall. FDOT aims to complete the project within a decade.
