Federal Government Will Lessen Restrictions On Marijuana

Using the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), the Biden administration is moving forward to reclassify marijuana.

The term “schedule substance” is used to describe the level of certain drugs. Currently, marijuana is listed as a Schedule 1 substance, putting it in the same category as heroin, LSD, and ecstasy.

By de-restricting marijuana, it would move down to a lower Schedule III drug like acetaminophe, ketamine and some anabolic steroids,

The move by the Biden White House would classify pot as medical use. In 2019, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, nearly 50 people used the drug. Several states have already legalized the drug for recreational and medical use.

In 2016, Florida voters passed an amendment bringing in medical marijuana, and this year, it’s on the November ballot for recreational use.

The group spearheading the Florida campaign is Smart & Safe Florida.

They issued a response responding to the move to lower the classification of Marijuana.

“We are pleased that the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration is following the recommendation of the Department of Health and Human Services in moving forward with a long-awaited policy change to reschedule marijuana from Schedule I to Schedule III,” said the group. “This movement towards reclassification is not only long overdue, but it aligns with what dozens of states that have already realized, grounding our nation’s policies in well-established science. This move will help destigmatize cannabis use and help usher in a future in which cannabis products can be safely and properly regulated with further federal reform.”
