The last month has not been pleasant for Florida Republican Congresswoman Anna Paulina Luna. Shas has taken heat not just from her Democratic opponents but also from Florida Governor Ron DeSantis and those in the pro-life community.
In 2020, Luna lost the 13th congressional district to former Congressman and Governor Charlie Crist, but Luna won the seat in 2022 with 53% of the vote when the district was redrawn to favor Republicans.
This year, Democrats believe they have a chance at Luna. On its rankings, the Cook Political Report rates Luna’s seat as “Lean Republican,” and Democrats view her as a vulnerable candidate to knock off in 2024.
Her opponent is Democrat Whitney Fox, former Director of Communications and Marketing for the Pinellas Suncoast Transit Authority.
One of Fox’s top campaign issues is the pro-abortion Amendment 4, where she says she wants to protect women’s reproductive freedoms.
Fix isn’t shy about her position on the amendment, but her campaign and supporters accuse Luna of being quiet on the topic.
A group backing Fox, the Blue Dog PAC, is running ad’s on “Luna’s silence” on the abortion issue.
When asked about the abortion claim, the GOP congresswoman said her opinion on Florida abortion measure ‘doesn’t really matter.’
“It’s a state’s rights issue,’ Luna told Politico. Luna’s stance angered some conservatives in the Pro-Life community.
At a GOP dinner, DeSantis called out some Florida elected officials for not taking a public stance against the pro-abortion amendment, with Luna being one of the individuals the Governor referred to too.
Even the pro-Fox PAC is using DeSantis’ words against Luna. ‘After being called out by her home state governor twice, it’s getting increasingly untenable for Anna Paulina Luna to stay quiet about amendment four,” the PAC said.
Some members inside the Pro-Life circles told Florida Daily that they were stunned Luna refused to take a position after pro-life groups supported her campaign when she ran in 2022.
Luna is also losing on the PR front. The Fox campaign has repeatedly challenged Luna to a debate, but Luna hasn’t accepted.
In late August, a St. Pete Poll showed Whitney leading Luna by 4 points, 48%-44%.
This past week, the Hill.com poll calculated an average of polls taken in the district, showing that Luna had a 0.7% lead.
GOP advisers tell Florida Daily that Luna is making unforced errors in her campaign and not tackling the top issues like showing where Fox agrees with far-left views by the Harris campaign on “price-gouging” which would lead to price controls.
But the GOP believes Luna will still win this race in November.
