Flagler County’s beaches are benefiting from ongoing sand replacement projects, but sustaining these efforts in the long term will require a significant financial commitment. County officials estimate that between $7 million and $10 million annually will be necessary to qualify for federal matching funds to continue the work for decades to come.
“We may need to consider property tax increases, along with potential cuts to county departments and programs,” said Flagler County Commission Chair Andy Dance.
Dance pointed out that the search for sustainable funding will have to restart, as previous discussions among commissioners failed to reach a lasting consensus.
In neighboring Volusia County, beach restoration is supported through a combination of tourism taxes and a new paid parking program. However, Flagler County remains divided on how to approach the issue. The County Commission is scheduled to meet again on June 16 to resume discussions on funding options.
