Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier has issued criminal subpoenas to Roblox Corporation, the company behind the widely used online gaming platform, as part of an investigation into whether its platform has enabled sexual predators to target children.
“Platforms like Roblox have become breeding grounds for predators to gain access to our kids,” Uthmeier said in a statement. “We will stop at nothing in the fight to protect Florida’s children, and companies that expose them to harm will be held accountable.”
The subpoenas aim to determine whether Roblox’s practices—or lack of sufficient safeguards—have contributed to instances of child exploitation. Investigators are examining reports that predators have used the platform to communicate with minors, exchange explicit material, and use the game’s virtual currency, “Robux,” to solicit illicit images.
Critics have accused Roblox of failing to adequately verify users’ ages or implement effective content moderation tools. Some victims have alleged the company ignored warnings about child safety risks while continuing to market the platform as secure for young players.
According to the Attorney General’s Office, additional reports suggest Roblox may have failed to notify law enforcement about incidents involving child exploitation.
Roblox, which has millions of daily users—many of them children—has faced growing scrutiny over safety issues in recent years. The Florida Attorney General’s investigation marks one of the most aggressive state-level actions against the platform to date.
