The pro-choice outlet Catholics for Choice is going after Catholic bishops in Florida who oppose the pro-abortion initiative known as Amendment 4.

The group condemns Catholic bishops for “wasteful spending” donating to fight the amendment, claiming that dollars directed by the Catholic church could go to better causes.
“I am appalled that my home Archdiocese of Miami just spent $129,037 dollars on this political interference — that money could have been used to support a number of other ministries providing care to immigrants, addressing homelessness, and more. I hope Catholics will seek transparency with the church and dioceses’ use of funds,” said Catholics for Choice President Jamie L. Manson.
Another board member, Gloria Romero Roses, said, “The Catholic hierarchy is funneling hundreds of thousands of dollars into the anti-abortion campaign to fight Amendment 4. That money could be better spent elsewhere.”
Catholics for Choice gives the impression the Florida Catholic church is being “secretive” about its intentions to donate to help combat the pro-choice amendment.
“Catholic dioceses and other groups funneled more than $2.7 million into the anti-abortion campaign, Catholic bishops, who misuse Sunday Mass to spread misinformation about abortion and this ballot. They spend millions of parishioners’ hard-earned dollars fighting the democratic process,” says the group.
But for years, the Catholic Church has defended and donated money to pro-life causes. The Florida Catholic bishops are one of the largest contributors to pro-life groups looking to defeat Amendment 4 this November.
Some pro-life groups view the verbal attacks by the Catholics for Choice as being too vicious.
“I get it you can disagree from one catholic to another on a certain position, but when you use the language that “anti-choice” efforts are being bankrolled by the bishops, and you act like they are doing something devious, then that’s just stepping over the line,” a member of the Florida Right to Life told Florida Daily.
