This week, U.S. Rep. Frederica Wilson, D-Fla., showcased her support for U.S. Rep. Brian Fitzpatrick’s, R-Penn., “Promoting Advancement Through Transit Help (PATH) to College Act.”
The bill creates a grant program to expand public transportation options near community colleges.
“Lack of public transit often acts as a barrier to entry for students looking to enroll in higher education programs, particularly in rural and underserved areas,” said Fitzpatrick. “My bipartisan PATH to College Act will provide grants to encourage the expansion of public transit options near community college campuses, further expanding accessibility for students across the country. I am grateful to Representatives Kilmer, Kean, and Wilson for leading with me on this effort and look forward to advancing this bill through the House.”
“Providing accessible transit to all students is essential to ensuring education equity. For so many students, unreliable transportation is a major roadblock to pursuing higher education,” said Wilson. “The PATH Act will help students get to school and expand access to colleges. As a champion for higher education, I know this legislation will be another critical step toward prioritizing access to education in our country.”
Other backers include U.S. Reps. Tom Kean, R-NJ, and Derek Kilmer, D-Wash. The Association of Community College Trustees (ACCT) is also backing the proposal.
The bill was sent to the U.S. House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee. So far, there is no companion measure over in the U.S. Senate.
