Consumers be on the lookout is the message from the Better Business Bureaus serving Florida (BBB).
They have launched an awareness campaign warning consumers about unlicensed activity that could happen over the summer months.
“Floridians need to thoroughly research professionals and businesses prior to hiring and to report suspected unlicensed individuals,” said the BBB.
If somebody is doing home repairs before or after a storm and they are unlicensed, they are breaking the law.
Complaints to state officials have seen an uptick in some communities where unlicensed activity has posed a significant risk to consumers, communities, and legitimate businesses.
The BBB says when contractors or other entities come knocking on your door proposing to do work, ask them about their license and proof of insurance. Contractors should carry general liability insurance and workers’ compensation insurance to protect themselves and the homeowner in case of an accident or injury.
Consumers should also ask for references, examples of work, check a business’s track record at BBB.org and look for the BBB Accredited Business Seal to know the company is committed to BBB’s standards of trust in the marketplace.
“By raising awareness and encouraging collaboration between regulatory agencies and industry stakeholders, we can combat unlicensed activity and protect the interests of consumers and businesses alike,” said Tom Stephens, from the Better Business Bureau.
The BBB says if any red flags should arise when consumers are not sure of the business they are dealing with, homeowners should verify they are dealing with a licensed professional. The first step is to verify a license with DBPR. Homeowners can visit DBPR’s website at MyFloridaLicense.com or call their customer contact center.
The BBB has online resources to educate consumers on how to hire a licensed professional with a good track record and to report unlicensed activity.
