Florida Democratic Congresswoman Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick has been federally charged with orchestrating a multimillion-dollar fraud scheme involving FEMA disaster relief funds and funneling illegal contributions into her political campaign, according to prosecutors. Federal investigators allege the lawmaker stole more than $5 million intended for disaster-assistance programs, diverting the money through a network of shell nonprofits and personal associates.
Prosecutors say the scheme involved submitting fraudulent reimbursement claims to FEMA for community relief projects that were never performed or were drastically overstated. The indictment alleges the congresswoman then routed a portion of the stolen funds back into her campaign operation, using disguised donations, straw donors, and coordinated contribution bundles to evade federal campaign-finance limits.
Federal authorities say the investigation expanded after auditors flagged irregularities in FEMA grant disbursements tied to the congresswoman’s district. The U.S. Department of Justice and the Department of Homeland Security’s Office of Inspector General jointly led the probe, which uncovered what officials described as “deliberate, systematic abuses of federal disaster-relief resources.”
The congresswoman has denied wrongdoing through her attorney, calling the charges “politically motivated” and vowing to fight the case in court. If convicted on all counts, she could face decades in federal prison, forfeiture of assets tied to the scheme, and permanent removal from office. A trial date has not yet been scheduled.
