Florida GOP Congress Members Tout Recent Votes on Immigration, Voting, Federal Judges

While Congresses has been on a 2-week recess, Florida GOP Congressional members are telling constituents about recent success on a number of votes.

Illegal Immigrants and Voting.

First one was H.R. 22, the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility Act. The SAVE Act is a bill to that says only American citizens can vote in federal elections and it requires proof of citizenship where an induvial must be in person when they register to vote.

Inside the bill, it directs states to establish a process for applicants who do not have documentary proof of citizenship or have discrepancies on their documents due to a name change but are in fact U.S. citizens to register to vote. The bill also mandates states to remove non-citizens from existing voter rolls, while giving them necessary tools to do so.

Reining-in Federal Judges

H.R. 1526, the No Rogue Rulings (NORRA) Act, is a bill to prevent the weaponization of the judiciary.

House GOP leaders say the bill was needed because federal judges were usurping President Trump’s executive authority simply because they don’t like his policies.

NORRA stops judges from issuing nationwide injunctions, instead ensuring their ruling only applies to specific parties in a case.

Since President Trump has been in office more than 15 nationwide injunctions have taking place against his administration, ranging from issues including birthright citizenship, border security, and protecting children from life-altering medical procedures.

Prior to 1973, there was no established historical authority for federal judges to issue nationwide injunctions. While federal courts could issue injunctions, these were typically directed at specific parties and did not have a nationwide scope. This bill will return courts to the limited scope of judicial injunctions.
