New stats by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) show Which state has the worst drivers running red lights.
The study by injury lawyer Bader Scott used data from the NHTSA to see which states had the highest percentage of drivers involved in fatal crashes from running red lights between 2018 and 2022.
It found that Nevada is the most dangerous US state for running a red light. Taking second on the list is Colorado. The third place on the list goes to New York, and Arizona takes fourth place on the list. Utah at number five, Maryland at number six, and Florida came in at number seven.
With Florida in the top ten, some will argue that more red-light cameras are needed. That argument was made back in 2010 that if more cameras were on the scene, traffic citations would drop. But what increased was the number of accidents that took place.
Red-light camera laws still exist in Florida, but the number of red-light cameras in the state has decreased in recent years.
In 2010, Florida passed laws allowing red light cameras. In 2018, the Florida Supreme Court ruled that red light cameras are legal in Florida.
The number of jurisdictions using red light cameras has decreased from 67 in 2016 to 42 in 2023 due to public outcry.
In 2024, a new law went into effect that requires cities to produce annual reports about their red light camera programs. The law also requires local governments to get traffic data to support their decision to install red light cameras.
A 2022 study found that traffic crashes increased at intersections with red light cameras.
What happens if you run a red light in Florida? The registered owner of the vehicle receives a ticket.
The ticket can impact your driving record, which could lead to increased insurance rates or a license suspension.
