Florida is 2nd Fastest Aging State in US

  • Florida is the second fastest aging state, with 21.3% of the population aged 65 and over.
  • The national average percentage of the population aged over 65 years old is 17.5%, and the average median age is 39.

New data has revealed the states with the fastest and slowest aging populations.

The study, conducted by life insurance experts at Beca Life, looked at the latest data from the 2022 Census to find the median age in each state and the percentage of the population aged over 65 years old.

Top 5 states aging the fastest

  1. Maine: Leading the nation with 21.8% of its residents aged 65 and over, Maine’s median age is the highest at 45. The state’s median age is 15% above the national average median age of 39.
  1. Florida: With 21.3% of its population aged over 65, and a median age of 42, Florida follows closely. Known for its warm climate and retiree-friendly amenities, it remains a top destination for older Americans.
  1. West Virginia: This Appalachian state has a median age of 43, with 20.9% of its residents over 65, reflecting a population aging in place amidst the state’s scenic and rural backdrop.
  1. Vermont: The state has 20.6% of its population aged over 65 years old and a median age of 43, highlighting its status as a state with strong community ties and limited young resident influx, contributing to a higher aging rate.
  1. Delaware: With 20% of Delaware’s residents aged 65 and above, this small East Coast state sees an aging trend, potentially due to its popularity among retirees seeking low taxes and coastal charm.
