Florida National Guard and NORTHCOM Announce Dual Status Commander for Hurricane Ian

The Florida National Guard and U. S. Northern Command announced the appointment of Army Brig. Gen. Sean Boyette, Florida National Guard, as the Dual Status Commander (DSC) leading state and federal troops supporting the Hurricane Ian response efforts in Florida.

During significant natural disasters, it is common for the NORTHCOM commander to appoint a DSC to jointly manage state and federal personnel, equipment, and resources. It requires the governor and the President to concur. The appointment is formalized through a standing Memoranda of Agreement with the Secretary of Defense.

The benefits of a DSC include a clear chain of command for federal and state military forces supporting response efforts. Additionally, it streamlines coordination efforts and enables the right people and equipment to get where they are most needed. This unique Joint Force relationship supplements the resources used during large scale disasters.
