Even since the Florida State Supreme Court approved an abortion amendment to be placed on the state ballot for this year, Democrats and the Biden campaign believe Florida “is winnable.” But according to the latest USA TODAY/Ipsos poll, Democrats have a long ladder to climb if they think the Sunshine State could go blue in 2024.
The Pro-Abortion Amendment
The USA TODAY/Ipsos poll found that only 50% of Florida voters would support the amendment which isn’t close to the 60% threshold needed to pass.
Only 34% of Florida voters approve of Gov. Ron DeSantis on the issue of abortion.
Trump vs. Biden
Since 2016, Florida’s presidential elections have favored the GOP candidate. Donald Trump defeated Hillary Clinton by just a point. In 2020, Trump beat Biden by three points. The USA Today poll shows Florida voters prefer Trump over Biden with an eight-point lead. Trump is at 39%, Biden is only at 31%.
Florida U.S Senate Race
Florida Senator Rick Scott is leading in his reelection bid against his competitor, former Florida Congresswoman Debbie Mucarsel-Powell. The poll says Powell is losing to Sen. Scott by 10 points, but other polls over the last month show a closer margin between the two. In the same poll, nearly 75% of Florida voters said they had never heard of the former Florida Congresswoman.
The Enthusiasm Gap Between Republicans and Democrats
When pollsters ask about voter enthusiasm, it gives them a plus or negative gauge on voter turnout. The numbers indicate Florida Republicans are excited about voting in the year’s election, with 80% of state GOP voters claiming they will be voting this year. Conversely, only 67% of Democrats said they were more likely to vote in November.
