Less than two years after Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis flipped former Democratic stronghold counties from blue to red en route to a landslide victory over Charlie Crist, the Republican Party of Florida’s lead of registered voters over Democratic voters surpassed 1 million.
“The number of registered Republican voters in Florida officially surpassed Democrats by more than 1 million on Sunday, a milestone reflecting political shifts in the Sunshine State and the largest margin for the GOP since the late 1980s,” the Orlando Sentinel reported. “That means Republicans make up nearly 37% of Florida’s voters, compared to about 29% for Democrats.”
Nikki Fried, chair of the Florida Democratic Party, faces major challenges before Election Day, as national polls continue to show Florida supporting Trump and other Republican candidates. Currently, the lone bright spot for Fried and the Democrats is a recent poll conducted by the University of North Florida that showed Senate candidate Debbie Mucarsel-Powell, a former congresswoman, within four points of incumbent Senator Rick Scott.
