If President Trump’s tax cuts were on the Senate floor today, Florida Senator Rick Scott (R) said he would vote against it. He criticized the bill for its lack of spending cuts and its failure to attempt a federal budget balance.
Sen. Scott isn’t the only conservative opposing the bill in its current form. Over the last week, Sen Scott has been on talk radio with Kentucky Sen Rand Paul and Sen. Ron Johnson from Wisconsin.
Scott is one of the more conservative Senators who is known to buck his party on fiscal issues. He says instead of looking at a balanced budget over 10 years, he wants to see it happen over the next three years.
“We need to get the spending for the ’26 budget cycle down to $6.5 trillion,” Scott said.
Usually the House puts out a more conservative approach on spending but not so according to Scott. He says what came from the GOP House doesn’t go far enough in his views on cutting waste.
“The Democrats have increased the budget by over 50% in the last five years. The House bill cuts spending by less than 2% over the next 10 years. It doesn’t even come close to balancing the budget,” Scott said.
Over the last week, Senator Scott has taken his message to talk radio and TV such as Fox News and Fox Business. The Senator touts his time as Florida Governor where he balanced the budget and slashed spending by hundreds of millions of dollars.
The Senator highlighted that the current deficit is now over $2 trillion and is expected to remain that high over the next few years.
“What we need to do in Washington, DC is what I accomplished when I was Governor in Florida,” the Senator said.
