While Republicans maintain an overall registration edge across Florida, there are several counties in the Sunshine State that are considered “dark blue” Democratic Party strongholds.
RELATED: Florida Counties with the Most Republicans.
Broward County has the highest total of Democratic Party voters registered, with approximately 597k registered Democrats. Home to Fort Lauderdale and the highest number of yacht owners per capita, Broward also boasts the largest lead over Republicans of all counties, with approximately 332k more Democrats than the Republican total of approximately 265k registered voters.
Southeastern Florida is known as the Democrats’ dominant region in the state, and for good reason. Broward County’s neighbor to the south, Miami-Dade, touts the second-highest total of registered Democratic voters in the state, with more than 576,000, a lead of approximately 150,000 more than the Republican Party.
To the north of Broward County sits Palm Beach County, which has the third-highest total number of registered Democratic voters, with more than 398,000 registered voters. Unlike its neighboring counties, Palm Beach doesn’t tout one of the top 3 largest Democratic leads over Republicans. In Orange County, home of Orlando, Republicans are not only outnumbered by Democrats, but they’re also outnumbered by independent voters. Orange County has the fifth-highest total number of Democratic voters registered, with approximately 361,000 reported, compared to approximately 217,000 Republicans and approximately 275,000 independents.
Hillsborough County, home of Tampa, has the fourth-highest total number of Democrats, with approximately 342,000 registered voters, but Republicans aren’t far behind by proportion, with approximately 290,000.
The only remaining blue counties are Duval County, home of Jacksonville, and the two largest “college town” counties,m: Alachua (University of Florida, located in Gainesville), and Leon, (Florida State University in Tallahassee.)
