A recent story Douglas Soule from the USA Today laid out a scenario where the marijuana industry could benefit if Florida Congressman Matt Gaetz gets confirmed to be the next Attorney General in the Trump administration.
Trump supported the marijuana initiative in this year’s election. With Gaetz at the helm, the movement to legalize marijuana is a possibility.
Gaetz opposed Amendment 3, but he has also supported measures laxing marijuana laws in the Florida House-backed bills to legalize medical marijuana in Florida and supported to stop marijuana testing in the U.S military. Gaetz also supported a bill that removes marijuana from the federal list of controlled substances.
David Culver, with the U.S. Cannabis Council said Matt Gaetz is one of the most pro-cannabis Republicans on Capitol Hill.
“By tapping him to serve as the nation’s top law enforcement officer, President-elect Trump is signaling his commitment to make good on his campaign promises around cannabis reform,” Culver said.
Trump may be ready to broaden areas, making marijuana more accessible.
A bipartisan effort may be underway that would allow the banking system to do business with the marijuana industry. Trump won’t get in the way of the Biden administration’s plans to reclassify marijuana from a Schedule I drug to a lesser drug, a Schedule III drug.
Those in the marijuana industry will be lobbying both sides to come up with a plan to legalize marijuana on a federal level or do it in several increments.
Marijuana advocates complained the Biden White House moved to slow on lowering weed on the scheduling system.
For the marijuana industry in Florida, a Trump presidency may be the best thing moving forward since the defeat of Amendment 3.
