The My Safe Florida Home Program was just appropriated over a $107 million dollars by the Florida Senate.
The program was created in 2022. It offers qualifying homeowners with free wind mitigation home inspections and awards wind mitigation grants to go toward storm-hardening homes.
Homeowners that get a wind mitigation inspection could also be eligible to apply for matching grant funds that will help with the recommended improvements. The state has provided $2 to match every $1 homeowners spend, up to $10,000.
This year’s legislation improves the functionality of the My Safe Florida Home program, which has proved to be beneficial to homeowners around the state. The bill, among other provisions, revises the improvements that mitigation grants may be used for and specifies eligibility for the program. The bill will also ensure that homeowners that need the program the most are able to utilize its benefits.
Supporters of the bill say the program has been a big success in allowing Floridians to better protect their homes from hurricanes and help cut insurance costs in the process.
“When a storm will take aim at our state, so it’s vital that we refund this program so more homeowners can benefit from free home inspections and storm mitigation grants,’ said Florida CFO Jimmy Patronis.
With the rise of insurance premiums over the last several years, the My Safe Florida Home Program will help homeowners with their cost.
Patronis has championed the program where Florida homeowners have saved $1,000 on their home insurance premiums by utilizing the program.
