Following the shooting at Florida State University (FSU) where two people were killed and six others injured, democratic officials and gun control groups are trying to get Florida lawmakers to pass more gun restrictions or halt pro-gun policies.
Immediately after the tragedy Florida Democratic Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz posted on her X account,
“Republicans when FSU students are shot after 100 other deadly mass shootings in 2025: “We must make it easier for teenagers to get assault rifles.”
Nikki Fried, the Chair of the Florida Democratic Party, blasted Florida Republicans, “the background checks for somebody to have it concealed is essential to protect our communities, and now, people don’t need a permit,” she said.
Other Florida gun control groups want legislation passed. Students Demand Action, Team Enough, and Moms Demand Action want new laws to be enacted.
Like expanding red flag laws, mandating safe storage laws for guns in homes, and providing more funding to harden college campuses.
But pro-gun advocates are scratching their heads at some of the comments made by the gun control crowd.
“So let me get this straight, these groups are stating that if red flag laws were expanded, or putting guns in a safe storage space, might have prevented the FSU shooting?” said Florida Daily legal analyst Ron Davis. “How would any of these ideas have prevented the shooting? We still don’t even know the shooter’s motive.”
Former Leon County Sheriff law enforcement officer JD Johnson chuckles at the idea that gun control laws would have stopped this shooting.
“If anything comes from this shooting, it should shed light on looking at having students and other adults be able to have concealed carry on college campuses which is not permitted by state law,” said Johnson.
Johnson Company, the Talon Training Group, which has trained more than 100,000 people in firearms safety and personal safety, says what is needed the most is to have churches, schools, and businesses trained in case of an active shooting.
