Is Trump Sending Mixed Signals on Florida Ballot Amendments?

Conservative commentators on social media were perplexed by former President Donald Trump‘s comments last week regarding his stance on Florida’s Marijuana and Abortion amendments.

When asked by a reporter from POLITICO about his views on the pro-abortion amendment 4, Trump said he would be holding a press conference at a later date to announce his position.

“I don’t want to tell you now, but Florida does have a vote coming up on that, and I think the vote will probably go in a slightly more liberal way than people thought, but I’ll be announcing that at the appropriate time, “ said the former president.

On the marijuana issue, Forbes and other news outlets hinted that Trump may support the marijuana amendment after he said he supported decriminalizing the drug.

“Well, as we legalize it, I start to agree a lot more,” Trump said. “Because, you know, it’s being legalized all over the country. Florida has something coming up. I’ll be making a statement about that fairly soon. But as we legalize it throughout the country, whether that’s a good thing or a bad thing, it’s awfully hard to people all over the jails that are in jail right now for something that’s legal.”

On the social media platform X, formerly Twitter, conservative pundits were disappointed and surprised that Trump would wait to make known his stance on the abortion amendment.

The Florida GOP and Gov. Ron DeSantis oppose both amendments.

“I don’t get it,” One member of a local pro-life group told Florida Daily. “The state Republican Party and the governor have come out and stated why they are voting against the abortion measure. What is Trump waiting on?”

Tallahassee pollster and media consultant Steve Vancore doubts that Trump will support Amendment 4, which would expand abortion rights and remove parental consent requirements.

“On the abortion front, I don’t think Trump is going to back it,” Vancore said. “He needs the pro-life community’s support.”

Vancore did say he was a little surprised and supportive of Trump’s comments about the marijuana amendment.

“I’m not saying he’s going to come out and endorse it, but his statement of decriminalizing it was welcomed by supports of Amendment 3.”
