Broward County Commissioner Jared Moskowitz, who served as Gov. Ron DeSantis’ director of the Florida Department of Emergency Management, defeated Republican Joe Budd to keep a South Florida seat for the Democrats.
The seat had been held by longtime U.S. Rep. Ted Deutch, D-Fla., who resigned at the start of last month to take over as CEO of the American Jewish Committee (AJC).
Still, Budd kept the race close. With 99 percent of the vote in, Moskowitz won with 51.4 percent, with Budd not too far behind at 47 percent.
Moskowitz, who also served in the Florida House, praised Deutch as he claimed victory on Tuesday night.
“Together, we made sure we can continue the legacy of Congressman Ted Deutch. And together, we will continue fighting for our Democratic values, to pass common sense gun safety solutions, protect our rights, and build upon our many hard-earned achievements in Washington,” he said.
