Make America Healthy Again (MAHA) Could Hurt Florida Farmers

The new MAHA report found that nearly 70% of American children’s calories come from ultra-processed foods, raising serious concerns about long-term health risks like obesity, diabetes, and more. The commission also found that over 40% of children have a chronic health condition,

Those on the commission want to examine the use of pesticides in agricultural food production to determine if there is a link to chronic diseases among children.

However, if the commission believes these products do more harm than good, it could harm the Florida farming industry.

The Florida agricultural community supports pesticide use in food, highlighting the benefits of maintaining an abundant and affordable food supply and reducing diseases that may affect humans.

Farm Bureaus and the University of Florida’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences say pesticides are widely used in producing food to control pests such as insects, rodents, weeds, bacteria, mold and fungus.

“In conclusion, pesticides play a vital role in modern agriculture, helping to ensure food security, improve food quality, and manage pest-related diseases. While it’s important to be aware of the potential risks associated with pesticide use, it’s equally crucial to recognize their role in providing an abundant and affordable food supply,” said the Farm Bureau.

If more regulations occur on Florida farmers, they say their food costs will explode, and the cost to consumers will double.

The Trump administration claims that farmers will not be affected by its efforts to reduce environmental chemical exposure in food, and the agricultural industry was a significant backer of the Trump campaign in 2024.

Nutritionists suggest that consumers can reduce pesticide exposure by purchasing organic or locally grown produce, thoroughly washing fruits and vegetables before consumption, and peeling or trimming outer leaves when necessary.
