Last week, U.S. Rep. Mario Diaz-Balart, R-Fla., weighed in on the opening of the Hialeah Housing Authority’s Villa Mariposa Affordable Housing Building.
A senior member of the U.S. House Appropriations Committee, Diaz-Balart is the top Republican on the U.S. House Transportation, Housing and Urban Development Appropriations Subcommittee (THUD). When the Republicans controlled the chamber, he chaired the subcommittee.
“Today is a day of celebration for our community and Hialeah Housing Authority,” Diaz-Balarrt said. “Villa Mariposa will serve a particularly vulnerable community, our elderly. With these 83 units, we will provide a stable and decent home to individuals and families– something everyone should be entitled to. These homes are a testament to what is possible by leveraging federal resources.
“Over the years, I have been able to increase funding for Housing and Urban Development (HUD) to help build housing complexes such as these. Specifically, the HOME Program, which I know Villa Mariposa utilized to build these units. As always, I am grateful to be in a position where I can help our communities prosper, and I will continue to ensure that this is always the case. I thank Julio Ponce, Hialeah Housing Director, for his tireless advocacy, as well as our local and state leaders for their dedicated work in ensuring our community is taken care of,” Diaz-Balart added.
In the past two years, through his work on the subcommittee, Diaz-Balart has been able to send $1.35 billion in federal funds to the HOME Investment Partnerships Program (HOME) Program.
