In 2024, Meta launched Instagram Teen Accounts, a new experience for teens with built-in, age-appropriate protections and parental supervision tools. This week, Meta is rolling out a plan to ensure Florida teens are accurately representing their age on Instagram, and if eligible, enrolled in a Teen Account.
Now, parents in Florida will receive a notification with information about how they can check and confirm their teen’s age on Instagram. Recognizing that parents may not have time to do this, Meta is also testing new AI technology to proactively find accounts that belong to teens and, even if they list an adult birthday, and place them into Teen Account settings.
Teen Accounts were developed with Florida parents in mind to address their top concerns, including the content their teens see online and who can contact them. Since September of 2024, over 25 million teens in the U.S. are using Instagram Teen Accounts. Nearly all (97%) teens aged 13–15 have kept the default safety settings on, and over 90% of parents surveyed say the new protections are helpful in supporting their teens on Instagram.
We’re notifying parents on Instagram with information about the importance of their teens providing the correct ages online, and tips to check and confirm their teens’ ages together. Parents don’t have to go it alone – we’re using AI to help place suspected teens into Teen Accounts settings,” said META.
We launched Instagram Teen Accounts last year to better support parents and give them peace of mind that their teens have the right protections in place. This reimagined experience has built-in protections that limit who can contact teens, the content they see and the time they spend online. Teens are automatically placed in these protective settings, and teens under 16 need parental or guardian approval to make changes. Now, we’re announcing additional steps we’re taking to ensure as many teens as possible benefit from these new protections.
META says the new rollout has been very positive with over 90% of parents surveyed say the new Teen Account protections are helpful in supporting their teens on Instagram. “Parents and teens alike are telling us that they are happy with this new, reimagined experience,” META said.
