Meta launches Facebook Marketplace Holiday Shop to Spotlight Budget Friendly Gifts

With inflation rising and concerns about the economy growing, Americans are expected to spend less over the holidays this season. To help address these concerns, Meta is introducing the Facebook Marketplace Holiday Shop. It is a virtual shopping experience that is intended to make finding unique and affordable gifts a little bit easier for shoppers. In the shop, users can find gifts handpicked by real people across popular Marketplace categories like fashion, collectibles and electronics.

The Holiday Shop is designed around the way that users already use Marketplace: browsing local listings, comparing prices, and finding items they can’t get from traditional retailers including new, gently used, and specialty items. The entire experience is meant to reduce time searching for the right items so that users can spend more quality time over the holidays with friends and family. You can find the shop by opening Marketplace, tapping the search icon, and typing “Holiday Shop.”

The shop will feature traditional filters such as price, category and proximity, plus new categories for the season that tend to see heavy interest around the holidays. Popular models of electronics, standout looks and seasonal fashion essentials and limited-run or hard to find collectibles are some examples of featured seasonal listings. Users can also continue to compare items across listings, to message sellers and view seller ratings, and to coordinate local pick-ups.

Creator collections don’t just serve as inspiration for holiday gifts, but also for making last-minute shopping more efficient. Facebook Marketplace has become a haven for last-minute shoppers, and the Holiday Shop builds on this trend by facilitating thoughtful gift-finding while removing the need to pay a premium on expedited shipping costs. At the same time, secondhand gifting is becoming more and more popular with shoppers as prices continue to rise this year.

Younger shoppers have fueled the popularity of Facebook Marketplace. One out of four young adult Facebook users in the U.S. and Canada visit the Marketplace daily, and in general, more than 490 million shoppers of all ages buy something on Facebook Marketplace every month. As holiday gift-giving participation remains high, the cost-saving benefits of Facebook Marketplace add to its popularity. At the same time, calls for shopping local are speaking to an increased strategy about where consumers are spending their money on gifts.

When available, Meta encourages using Facebook Marketplace’s built-in checkout in order to activate Purchase Protection on eligible orders. The company also recommends completing purchases through Facebook Marketplace, and they recommend against sharing unnecessary personal data. Users can report suspicious listings and stop communicating with a seller if something feels off. The Federal Trade Commission urges consumers to research sellers and to avoid offers that demand gift cards, wire transfers, payment apps or crypto as payment methods.

Marketplace has become known for finding deals close to home. The Holiday Shop adds to this familiar experience by reducing the need to go out into crowded and picked through stores during the busiest shopping period of the year. It’s available through Facebook Marketplace, and it will continue to be updated throughout the season as trends and ideas evolve.
