Miami Ranked 2nd U.S. City with the Dirtiest Airbnb Rentals

Coming out of Covid, the Florida market for renting an Airbnb has skyrocketed, but some locations are cleaner for consumers than compared to others.

A new report reveals which U.S. has the dirtiest Airbnb. Travel site Miss Tourist analyzed data from Airbnb to find the average cleanliness rating for the three most populated cities and capitals in each state. Data was taken from a total of 175 US cities and filtered by the 100 most reviewed properties in each. Some of the cities had fewer than 100 Airbnb listings and, therefore, had less analyzed properties.

Coming in at number one, the filthiest city for Airbnb rentals was New York City, New York.

At number 2 was Miami, Florida. In third place is Grand Forks, North Dakota. Honolulu, Hawaii, ranks fourth. In fifth comes Jersey City, New Jersey.

Chicago, Illinois, ranks sixth. Tying for seventh are Jackson, Mississippi, and Newark, New Jersey. In eighth place is Montgomery, Alabama.

Gillette, Wyoming, ranks ninth and landing the tenth spot is Columbus, Georgia.

Yulia Saf, founder of Miss Tourist, commented on the findings:

“Cleanliness is one of the most important factors for travelers when booking accommodation,” Saf said. “Our study highlights the cities where Airbnb guests report the most concerns about cleanliness, emphasizing the need for consistent upkeep and high standards. Whether due to high turnover rates, varying host practices, or other factors, these trends offer valuable insights for both travelers and hosts looking to improve the short-term rental experience.”

During and right after the COVID-19 pandemic, Airbnb took a financial hit. Now local cities have put in place local zoning laws restricting who and what groups and how many can stay overnight at Airbnb’s.

Reports of renters leaving Airbnb’s dirty with garbage being left in the front yard have caused outrage from local neighbors pushing to have new laws put in place that won’t lower the property values of a home.
