Miami Seaquarium May Close Permanently Due to Lease Cancellation by County Officials

Following years of protests from animal rights groups and multiple violations cited by various government regulators, the Miami Seaquarium may permanently close in the near future.

Miami-Dade County officials canceled the land lease agreement with the Seaquarium, which has been in operation since 1955. Activists utilized YouTube, TikTok and other social media platforms to raise awareness of captivity tanks for dolphins and the former resident killer whale that were comparatively much smaller than tanks at other parks such as SeaWorld, which they also seek to close. Animal rights activist group PETA, which owns stock in SeaWorld, celebrated news of the county’s decision to cancel the lease.

On X, the social network formerly known as Twitter, PETA posted this statement:

Following a massive PETA campaign, Miami-Dade County officials have announced plans to terminate the notorious @MiamiSeaquariums lease! We’re urging authorities to act swiftly to shut the animal prison down. The animals are ready!
