New Florida Law Requires Driver Ed for Teenagers

Governor Ron DeSantis just signed SB 994 into law, requiring that, starting July 1, all first-time applicants for a learner’s license (ages 14.5-17) must complete a driver education course approved by the Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (DHSMV).

This new requirement raises an important question for families across Florida: “What do we do next?”

Florida Virtual School (FLVS) is offering online driver ed courses, which are DHSMV-approved and already helping thousands of students meet the new requirement, on their own schedule.

With more than 55,000 students across the state completing some form of Driver Education with Florida Virtual School this school year (2024-25), FLVS say the online course can help students meet this new requirement, as well as additional benefits like schedule flexibility, personalized teacher support, and more.

Other key benefits of the FLVS Driver Ed course:

Safe & Comprehensive: Students learn safe driving habits in a standards-based, state-approved course.

Earn Credit: Students receive 0.5 high school elective credit upon completion.

<

Tuition-Free*: No cost for Florida students (*unique requirements apply to FL students who receive scholarship funding).

1:1 Teacher Support: Personalized guidance from certified, experienced instructors.

Trusted Provider: Nearly 20 years of experience and over 900,000 students served.

Free Learner’s License Exam: Students can take the exam online at no cost after completing the course.

Fully Online: 24/7 access— students learn at their own pace, anytime, anywhere.

Instant Certificate: Completion certificate available immediately and reported to the DMV.

Build driving confidence: Helps students develop the essential skills to feel road-ready.
