News Around the State

Headlines across Florida for June 12, 2024:

Florida’s GOP Numbers Continues To Grow

New state voter registration data shows Florida Republicans increasing their margin over Democrats. The Florida Division of Elections shows voter registrations for Republicans just over 900,000, which accounts for approximately 39 percent of the state’s voters, compared to Florida Democrats at 32 percent.

Florida Senator Rick Scott Opposes Marijuana Amendment

Florida GOP U.S. Sen. Rick Scott says he won’t support Amendment 3 on this year’s ballot.  Though 57% of the GOP voters in the state said they would vote in favor of it and overall, 66% said the same according to a recent Fox News poll.  The amendment would legalize recreational marijuana usage, for those 21 years and older. It needs 60% to pass.

A Future Decline In Florida’s Population

Florida TaxWatch issued a report stating that the state could see a decrease in people moving to the state from now through 2028. The report admits that Florida’s population will continue to increase, just at a slower rate compared to the past few years. The increase in people moving to the state between 2023 and 2028 is predicted to be around 1.45 million people.

The group says the current population is 22.7 million but will modestly increase in 2028 to about 24.1 million.

Still, hundreds of thousands of jobs are expected to grow, but that will also be at a slower rate.
