In the last several weeks, 47 of the nation’s top 50 universities have seen protests turn into riots. Arkansas Republican Sen. Tom Cotton says his new bill is aimed at anti-Jewish protestors who break the law. His proposal would ban any student convicted of crimes during these – or any other protests – making them “ineligible for student debt forgiveness, cancellation, waiver, or modification of certain Federal student loans.”
Cotton’s bill, called the “No Bailouts for Campus Criminals Act“, would prevent so-called “bailouts” from being given to anyone convicted of federal or state crimes convicted of protesting at college campuses.
“They (taxpayers) especially shouldn’t have to pay off the loans of Hamas sympathizers shutting down and defacing campuses,” said Cotton.
Eighteen other GOP Senators have jumped on board to co-sponsoring the legislation. A GOP analyst tells Florida Daily expects to see Florida Senators Marco Rubio and Rick Scott to also support the measure.
Other proposals being listed to deal with the protestors is having visas revoked for foreign students supporting Hamas to have their visas revoked.
The GOP sees this as a winning issue against Democrats this year.
Axios.com reported that House and Senate Democrats’ anxiety is spiking as pro-Palestinian protests on college campuses around the country kick into overdrive. “The longer they continue, and the worse that they get, the worse it’s going to be for the election overall,” one House Democrat told Axios.
President Biden has been criticized for not quickly addressing the protest on the universities. Former President Trump said he would “I say remove the encampments immediately, vanquish the radicals and take back our campuses for all of the normal students who want a safe place from which to learn.
