Opinion: We Keep Losing Because We Keep Playing the Game

Politics and elections have always been wonderful spectator activities, especially if you don’t invest too much of either your own time or money.

Voters continue to choose sides, embracing whomever has their preferred D or R labels, regardless of competencies, personalities, or performances. Big problems, big issues, and complex messes continue along, with lots of finger-pointing and name-calling, but infrequent workable and effective solutions. Take a look at your property insurance bill lately? If you could, who then would you blame? From where do you expect solutions?

Look at the National scores on NAEP for 4th and 8th-grade students. Miserable. Is there a politician anywhere focused on why and offering a prescription for improvement?

Both parties benefit from voters willing to embrace someone they know is a jackass, but it’s their jackass. We demand so little and expect even less. We continue to ride our own jackass while deriding the opposition jackass. We especially continue to treat our governance as if it’s a sporting contest. In the end it continues to be a contest we all lose.

Our bills grow higher while our 401’s grow smaller. I’m having a hard time identifying winners in this endless game we play.
